Tips to keep hydrated this summer

As the weather gets hotter and we spend more time outside socialising and exercising, we lose more water from our bodies through perspiration than usual. So, in summer it becomes increasingly important to keep yourself hydrated. Water is used by our body to transport nutrients, including oxygen, to all the cells in our body – when we’re dehydrated, our brain function becomes impaired and we can suffer from fatigue. Here are a few tips to make sure that you don’t get dehydrated this summer:

  • Jazz up your daily 8 glasses of water with fruit and herbs so that you’re more tempted to keep topping up your water glass.
  • Fruits and veggies are naturally packed with water, so increase your intake. Also, look at adding cold soups to your weekly menu as these are a great source of water.
  • If you’re feeling peckish, but lunchtime is far away, rather have a glass of water – hunger is often mistaken for thirst.
  • Keep a bottle of water with you as you go about your day, filling it up as you finish it. Also, if you’re going to be training, make sure to drink water before, during and after your workout.
  • If you forget to drink your daily amount of water, set a reminder on your phone or on your email calendar so that you’re prompted to hydrate.
